As there is no road crossing the park from west to east, we have to drive all around Fitzgerald River National Park to go from Albany to Esperance. Although we didn’t initially plan to visit it, the drive went well, so we got tempted by camping in the National Park rather than in a resting area. We pushed south to Hopetoun, on the east side of the park. Fitzgerald River National Park doesn’t seem to be amongst the most popular destinations on the southern coast of Western Australia, but it’s really a hidden gem.

Just before sunset, we reached the almost empty Four Mile Beach campground.

Fitzgerald River National Park - Wester Australia 01

I am glad we changed plans to seize the opportunity to stop at Fitzgerald River National Park on our way from Albany to Esperance.

The site we chose for the night offered full privacy, and I could only appreciate this more after being woken up at 4 am by our neighbours in Albany! The only noises in the surroundings were the crashing waves and the birds. Remote camping next to the beach is one of the best experiences Australia can offer.

On the next day, we visited the breathtaking Barrens Beach. I usually don’t like to spend a full day sitting on a beach, but this one would have enough charms to keep me entertained all day long. But we didn’t have much time to wander around, so we left late in the morning after checking out a couple of lookouts (Barrens Lookout and Sepulcralis Hill).

The drive from Albany to Esperance is particularly long because of Fitzgerald River National Park.

You cannot go through Fitzgeral National Park following the coast; you have to drive around it. Don’t be resentful. If you have time, give Fitzgerald River National Park a chance, even just for a night and a couple of hours. It’s a nice stop between Albany to Esperance; you won’t regret it!
