What was so special about our Brisbane helicopter ride?

We were lucky with the timing. Our Brisbane helicopter ride was on a very clear day. We could see clearly from the Gold Coast to the Glasshouse Mountains. We flew over Moreton Bay at low tide when the sandbanks become obvious and create mesmerising shapes in the water. We’ve experienced a lot Moreton Bay from a sailing boat and always found the sandbanks stunning. From the helicopter, the colours looked unreal. It was unbelievable.

As we approached Point Lookout on Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island), we spotted dolphins, dugongs, whales and manta rays!

Is it worth going on a Brisbane helicopter ride?

To be honest, I don’t have a lot of experience flying in a helicopter. It was only my second flight; I went on a helicopter ride about 10 years before over the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles.

Flying always feels special. In a helicopter, you can notice a lot more details below you. It’s an experience I highly recommend trying at least once. We’ll never forget our Brisbane helicopter flight. Moreton Bay looks stunning from up there. But helicopter tours are pricey and there are other places in Australia where you can get amazing bird views of iconic sites, such as Sydney Harbour*, the Whitsundays*, Uluru*, the Great Barrier Reef* and the Great Ocean Road. If I had to choose only one place for a helicopter ride, I honestly don’t know which one I’d pick!

Responsible travel tip: A helicopter ride is not eco-friendly and as often when you travel, there’s a real dilemma as travelling often increases your carbon footprint. If you feel bad about it, you should consider buying carbon offsets for your flight. It’s never as good as reducing your emissions in the first place, of course. But I think it’s better than doing nothing. You can learn more about carbon offsets here. An online calculator can help you estimate your carbon emissions when you travel. For this flight over Moreton Bay, we

Finding a helicopter ride in Brisbane

You can book a tour online* to go in a helicopter and discover Brisbane from the sky. Not all tours include a scenic flight over Moreton Bay and its beautiful islands*. Some tours go inland so you may not get the Moreton Bay views featured in this article. We didn’t go inland, but I’m sure it’s a great experience too. You get to see interesting geological features and understand better the region. You can also fly over Moreton Island* from Tangalooma*.
