Lighting is a big part of setting the right atmosphere when camping. We like keeping things simple – a mix of practical and cosy options that don’t take up much space. Whether we’re cooking dinner, reading, or just enjoying a quiet night by the fire, these are the lights we always bring along.

Petzl headlamps
Why we love it: We’ve got two types – one is super light (Petzl Bindi), so comfortable I forget I’m wearing it, while the other one (Petzl Swift) is more powerful and perfect for seeing further away at night. They’re great for setting up camp, cooking, or heading to the toilet in the dark. Petzel is a very reliable brand.
Our tip: Go for rechargeable ones if you can – it saves batteries and makes recharging easy with a power bank, but they’re also lighter and more comfortable!

Solar LED fairy lights
Why we love it: They charge during the day, so there’s no need for power, and they completely change the feel of the campsite at night. They’re soft, warm, and way cosier than headlamps – perfect for relaxing after dinner.
Our tip: Drape them around your table, swag, or tent for the best effect. Choose warm white rather than bright white for a softer glow, and make sure they are well-suited for the outdoors (water-resistant).

Storm lantern
Why we love it: It’s our go-to for dining or just sitting outside at night. It gives off a lovely old-fashioned mesmerising light and, when we fill it with citronella oil, it doubles as mosquito protection.
Our tip: Store it carefully and securely upright – it can leak if tipped over during transport.
