Getting a good night’s sleep can make or break a camping trip. After years of road trips and nights under the stars, we’ve found the gear that helps us rest well wherever we are. Here’s what we use – and a few tips to help you stay comfortable too.
Tri-Fold foam mattress
Why we love it: Super comfortable and ready to use, with no risk of deflating like an air mattress. It also insulates well from the cold ground.
Our tip: It does take up a bit of space, so make sure you plan your car packing around it. For us, it’s worth it for the comfort!

Hiking mattress
Why we love it: Perfect when space is limited. Not as cushy as our foam mattress, but it does the job and packs super small.
Our tip: Check the R-value (insulation rating) if you’re camping in cooler weather – it makes a big difference.

Bed sheets and pillowcases
Why we love it: We bring our soft, silky-feel bamboo sheets from home – they feel cool and fresh, and make sleeping in the tent feel a bit more luxurious.
Our tip: We roll our sheets instead of folding them – it saves space and keeps them nice and smooth when it’s time to make the bed.

Inflatable pillow
Why we love it: A good pillow is key to waking up without a sore neck. When space allows, I sometimes bring my ergonomic pillow from home, but the inflatable ones are surprisingly comfortable too.
Our tip: Test a few models – the shape and valve position can make a big difference to comfort.
Sleeping bags (4°C comfort rating)
Why we love it: We’ve had our Lafuma sleeping bags for over 15 years – a great investment. They’re perfect for cold nights and can zip together, which makes them ideal for couples.
Our tip: Go for a model with a temperature rating that matches where you’ll camp.

Lightweight camping quilt
Why we love it: We prefer this over a sleeping bag when it isn’t too cold – it feels freer and more like a real bed. It’s also great for sharing and staying cosy together.
Our tip: Choose a blanket that’s machine washable and quick to dry; it makes life much easier after a dusty or damp trip.

Our Fresh and Black tent
Why we love it: Compact, easy to pitch, and dark inside – perfect for a good night’s sleep even when the sun rises early. We use a Quick Hiker version of the Decathlon Fresh & Black tent, which packs down really well. It’s small, but big enough for sleeping comfortably – we spend most of our time outdoors anyway.
Our tip: The black interior makes a huge difference in comfort and sleep quality.
