When you start looking for a place to stay on the Gold Coast, the vibrant suburbs of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach immediately come to mind. They each offer a unique slice of the seaside lifestyle that’s become synonymous with the Gold Coast. Deciding where to base yourself can be challenging, as each has its own character, attractions, and atmosphere. We’ve stayed in both Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, so our experience can help you make your choice.
Why Surfers Paradise is better than Broadbeach

Known for its iconic skyline and dynamic atmosphere, Surfers Paradise offers many holiday activities for families, adults, and partygoers. It has been the Gold Coast hotspot for years, famous for its bustling beachfront, towering skyline, and endless entertainment options. Surfers Paradise is perfect for those who love being at the centre of the action, including adults looking for nightlife and families who appreciate the proximity to attractions. Let’s look at what I find is better in Surfers Paradise compared to Broadbeach.
Surfers Paradise is famous and iconic
Surfers Paradise is the pulsing heart of the Gold Coast, with a very unique skyline in Australia. The skyscrapers next to the beach make this destination look different from any other beach you’ll visit in the country.
As you’d have guessed from the name, it’s also a famous surfing beach. While I’d argue it doesn’t always offer the best conditions for surfing, it’s perfect for those who want to mix surfing with other activities during their holidays. You can also easily take surfing lessons*.
What you find in Surfers Paradise that won’t be in Broadbeach
Busy atmosphere, restaurants and nightlife
The atmosphere in Surfers Paradise is electric. During the day, the beach is full of energy from beachgoers and street performers, while at night, the precinct transforms with colourful lights and lively crowds. The atmosphere after sunset and the nightlife in Surfers Paradise are unmatched. You’ll find an amazing choice of busy restaurants (check out my tips to choose one), bars, pubs, and clubs, making it a haven for those who like to stay up late. I always find that everything closes early in Australia, but it’s not like that in Surfers Paradise!
While you’ll find restaurants in both Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, the number of choices in Surfers Paradise is hard to beat. It’s even more true if you like eating late. In comparison, Broadbeach was not buzzing and became very quiet after the dinner peak hour.
More entertainment, attractions and tours

Entertainment options abound in Surfers Paradise. Beyond the beach, you’ll find escape rooms, arcades, and live performances. There’s always something happening, from street entertainment on Cavill Avenue to the renowned Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets.
It’s a touristy destination with attractions to seduce both kids and adults. The SkyPoint Observation Deck*, which offers panoramic views, is the most prominent and famous attraction in Surfers Paradise, maybe on par with the Slingshot as screams will catch your attention. You’ll also find indoor fun for the whole family with iFly skydiving*, Infinity’s mind-boggling mazes, Timezone, and the interactive Ripley’s Believe It or Not! all within walking distance.

If you want to learn surfing, you can easily book lessons* from Surfers Paradise.
Plus, you’ll find a wider selection of tours departing from Surfers Paradise to explore the area. There are many day trips to stunning nearby destinations like the Gold Coast Hinterland and its beautiful national parks, such as Springbrook (like this tour*, for example), or tours to Moreton Island*. Personally, I love the convenience of being just a few minutes walk from the departure point, which you get in Surfers Paradise but not necessarily in Broadbeach, where you might need to organise transportation.
From Surfers Paradise, you can also easily enjoy many activities on the river (see below) that you won’t find in Broadbeach.
The river
While Surfers Paradise is known for its beautiful beach, it offers more than just sandy shores. Just a short stroll from the iconic beach, down the bustling Cavill Avenue, you’ll find a serene park by the river. This peaceful spot provides a refreshing change of pace from the beach, especially on windy days.
Along the river, you can enjoy various attractions like jet skis*, jet boats*, parasailing*, sightseeing cruises with lunch* and cruises to the HOTA museum.
And you’ll be treated to breathtaking sunset views of the hinterland. Families with young children will appreciate the small beach nearby, perfect for some extra fun in the sun.
Looking for accommodation to enjoy the best of Surfers Paradise? We love this stunning corner apartment in the Circle on Cavill tower, just a short walk from the beach. Its unique corner setting with floor-to-ceiling windows offers unbeatable views of the hinterland that get even better at sunset. Relax in the private spa with river views, or take a dip in one of the multiple pools available in the complex. Book now*.

Accommodations in Surfers Paradise
From budget-friendly hotels to luxury high-rises, accommodations in Surfers Paradise cater to all preferences and offer amenities that are second to none, ensuring a comfortable stay. In general, when it comes to accommodations or dining options, I noticed there are fewer budget-friendly choices in Broadbeach compared to Surfers Paradise.
Why Broadbeach is better than Surfers Paradise

Broadbeach offers a slightly more relaxed vibe with an equally beautiful beach, a few restaurants and plenty of shopping. It’s the perfect spot if you’re after a beach getaway close to all the perks without the intensity of Surfers Paradise. Indeed, you can easily walk, cycle or ride the tramway to Surfers Paradise from Broadbeach (2km along the beach).
Shopping
You’ll find many small shops you can walk to in the heart of Surfers Paradise. But Broadbeach doesn’t disappoint when it comes to shopping. You’ll be spoilt with choices like the Oasis Shopping Centre and the famous Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, which offer a wide range of Australian and international brands. However, getting to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre is just as easy from Surfers Paradise as it is from Broadbeach.
Attractions

The Star Gold Coast, formerly known as Jupiters Hotel and Casino, is located in Broadbeach but not next to the seaside. It’s a popular entertainment destination offering a range of gaming options, restaurants, bars, and live entertainment venues.
Otherwise, you won’t find specific attractions in Broadbeach, like Surfers Paradise, but there are still fun activities available, such as arcade games at the Oasis Shopping Centre.

Broadbeach Surf Club is one of my favourite restaurants for lunch to enjoy the beautiful views. It’s recommended to book if you want a table with ocean views during the weekend.
Accommodations
You’ll find luxury hotels and budget-friendly apartments in Broadbeach, all with great amenities. However, there’s more choice in Surfers Paradise, especially if you’re looking for a room within a resort without breaking the bank.
Going from Broadbeach to Surfers Paradise

Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise are neighbours and well-connected. You have a few options for travelling between them, from enjoying a leisurely walk to catching convenient public transport or driving.
Active transport options
Walking: One of the simplest ways to get to Surfers Paradise from Broadbeach is on foot. It’s a scenic 2-kilometre walk along the beachfront that typically takes about 25 minutes.
Cycling: If you prefer cycling, it’s possible to hire a bike and ride along the well-maintained bike paths. This should get you there faster and still allow you to enjoy the views. If you plan to do it a few times for commuting, you can use the Lime shared bikes.

Public transport options
Tram: The G tram conveniently connects Broadbeach to Surfers Paradise. Tram services are frequent, and it only takes roughly 10 minutes – making it the top pick for public transport. And they made it very easy to use: you can simply tap your bank card to pay for the 50c trip.
Bus: Several bus routes operate between the two neighbourhoods. While generally less direct than the tram, buses can be a good alternative if they align with your starting point or destination.

Driving (and parking!)
Driving between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach can be quick, taking about 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. However, once you arrive, finding a parking spot can be challenging, especially during peak times. Public car parks and street parking are available, but fees apply, so you should be prepared for this additional cost. We really prefer leaving the car at our accommodation and cycling or taking the tram to Broadbeach. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also eco-friendly!
Surfers Paradise vs Broadbeach: which one is the best?
While both localities offer stunning stretches of sand and attractive entertainment and shopping options, your choice might come down to the type of experience you’re seeking. Those looking to be in the thick of the action might lean towards Surfers Paradise, with its undeniable energy and tourist attractions. On the other hand, those who appreciate a slower pace and don’t mind making a small effort to get to activities might find Broadbeach a better fit.
I prefer staying in Surfers Paradise, especially by the river, like at Circle on Cavill*. It’s a bit quieter than being right on the beach, but still super convenient with amazing views. Everything we want to do is within walking distance, so we don’t need to worry about planning much since our accommodation is always nearby. When I visit the Gold Coast, I enjoy experiencing one of two extremes: being in the thick of it in Surfers Paradise or getting away from it all in the beautiful Hinterland.
