One of the perks of living in Brisbane is how many international destinations are just a direct flight away – no stopovers, no long layovers, just grab your passport and go. Whether you’re after a tropical island, a bustling Asian city, or a faraway cultural experience, there’s a lot you can reach from Queensland’s capital.

Here’s a breakdown of all the international destinations from Brisbane you can fly to directly – grouped by region and ordered by flight time. You might be surprised to learn that Brisbane’s closest international neighbours are French, and they’re as close as Cairns!

Responsible travel tip: Sustainable travel tip: Flying direct not only saves you time to enjoy your holiday exploring exciting places rather than sitting in airports – it also reduces your carbon emissions. International travel from Australia often involves long flights, so cutting out a stopover is one simple way to reduce a bit your carbon footprint.

Pacific Islands

It’s the closest international escape from Brisbane – and I simply love it. We’ve had a blast during every single trip we’ve done to an island in the Pacific. It’s perfect for adventurers like us who enjoy connecting with locals and escaping the crowds in lesser-visited destinations, but it’s also ideal for travellers who just want to relax in a resort with splendid beaches and crystal-clear water.

Noumea, New Caledonia

  • Flight time: 2hr 15min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

French beaches, tropical waters, and croissants? Oui. Nouméa is a quick island escape with a French twist – ideal for snorkelling, swimming, and island-hopping. Did you know that the lagoon of New Caledonia is the largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Plus, overwater bungalows are just a short ferry ride from Nouméa, making it an easy luxury escape.

There are several islands to explore in New Caledonia, but the main island also offers a lot of things to do. We really enjoyed scuba diving in Hienghene.

Port Vila, Vanuatu

  • Flight time: 2hr 40min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu. While there’s plenty to do on Efate Island, we actually preferred the other two islands we visited – Santo (also accessible via direct flight from Brisbane) and Tanna (famous for its splendid volcano).

Luganville (Santo), Vanuatu

  • Flight time: 2hr 50min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

Stunning beaches, incredible snorkelling and diving, swimming in crystal-clear blue holes and even canyoning – we had an unforgettable adventure in Santo.

Hesitating between Vanuatu and New Caledonia? We loved both! Here’s a comparison based on our experiences that could help you choose the best destination for you.

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

  • Flight time: 3hr 10min
  • Time difference: no time difference

Port Moresby offers a taste of Papua New Guinea’s culture and coastal scenery, but safety concerns mean most visitors keep their stay brief. It’s mainly a gateway to the country’s spectacular highlands, villages, and diving spots.

Munda, Solomon Islands

  • Flight time: 3hr 10 min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

Every Friday, there’s a direct flight from Brisbane to Munda (and back), which is a fantastic destination in the Solomon Islands. It offers great scuba diving, and you can stay at lovely resorts on nearby islands.

Honiara, Solomon Islands

  • Flight time: 3h 20 min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

We loved exploring the Solomon Islands; they felt more remote and rugged than other Pacific destinations. That said, Honiara, the capital, isn’t where you’ll want to stay. The real appeal lies in the diving spots, WWII relics, and vibrant village culture spread across the islands.

Nadi, Fiji

  • Flight time: 3hr 20min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

Palm trees, turquoise waters and relaxed vibes. Fiji is perfect for a romantic getaway, a family holiday, or just a week of doing nothing but enjoying the views from your overwater bungalow. I’m convinced we’ll visit one day.

Nauru

  • Flight time: 4hr 35min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

This is the third-smallest country in the world, covering just 21 square kilometres, and also one of the world’s least-visited nations. You can walk around the entire island in just a few hours! If you’re after something truly off the beaten path, you may be interested in exploring Nauru’s coastal loop road and phosphate-mining history.

Apia, Samoa

  • Flight time: 4hr 55 min
  • Time difference: +3 hours

Lush hills, friendly smiles, and a laid-back harbourfront. Apia is great for sampling Samoan culture, browsing colourful markets, and heading out to waterfalls or coastal villages. I hope to visit one day before exploring the rest of the islands.

Rarotonga, Cook Islands

  • Flight time: 6hr 10 min
  • Time difference: -10 hours

The Cook Islands will be a brand-new direct destination from Brisbane, with direct flights starting in May 2026. I haven’t been there yet, but it’s high on my list. This laid-back island nation is known for turquoise lagoons, lush mountains, and some of the friendliest hospitality in the Pacific. On Rarotonga, the main island, you can drive the coastal road in under an hour, hike into the volcanic interior, or snorkel straight off the beach. A short flight takes you to Aitutaki, famous for its pristine lagoon and postcard-perfect motus. Keep in mind that you cross the International Date Line when flying from Brisbane, so you arrive the day before.

New Zealand

I absolutely loved every road trip I’ve done in New Zealand, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it, bit by bit. I usually prefer going when the weather is warmer and sunnier, so it’s easier to plan hikes and scenic drives, but it’s also a great destination for winter sports.

Auckland

  • Flight time: 3hr 10min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

We landed in Auckland but didn’t stay long in the city; the North Island of New Zealand has a lot to offer. We loved scuba diving the Poor Knights Islands and hiking in unique environments, from geothermal valleys to lush forests and volcanic landscapes.

Christchurch

  • Flight time: 3hr 30min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

We didn’t spend much time in Christchurch itself, but that’s where we flew into for a road trip on the South Island, including Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. The drive was absolutely stunning – one of my favourites in New Zealand.

Queenstown

  • Flight time: 3hr 30min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

Queenstown is special for adventure lovers. It’s the go-to destination for winter sports, but I visited just after summer and loved hiking in the region (Kepler Track) and taking a trip to the famous Milford Sound. I’ll also never forget this place – it’s where I did my first (and last!) bungee jump, at 134 metres, the third-highest bungee platform in the world.

Wellington

  • Flight time: 3h 35min
  • Time difference: +2 hours

I haven’t been there yet, but I’ve heard great things. Wellington is known for its excellent museums, strong coffee culture, craft beer scene and artsy, laid-back vibe.

South East Asia

The destinations in South East Asia all have very different vibes. While it’s often hard to escape the crowds and we’re always a bit wary of tourist traps, we’ve managed to visit well-known places without feeling overwhelmed and even had fun connecting with local guides. Many travellers love this region because it’s affordable, diverse, and packed with flavour – and we’ve found it delivers great value for unique experiences.

Palau

  • Flight time: 6hr
  • Time difference: -1 hour

Palau is a dream for divers and nature lovers, with its famous jellyfish lake, untouched coral reefs, and lush rock islands. It’s also one of the most conservation-focused countries in the Pacific, which makes it even more appealing if you care about sustainable travel. We haven’t made it there yet, but it’s high on our wishlist as our friends came back highly satisfied.

Note: While Palau is technically in Micronesia, I’ve grouped it under Southeast Asia as it’s often combined with other destinations in that region.

Denpasar (Bali), Indonesia

  • Flight time: 6h 15min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

Yoga in Ubud, surf in Canggu, sunsets in Uluwatu – Bali has it all. A reliable all-rounder for food, fun, and tropical warmth.

Cebu, Philippines

  • Flight time: 6hr 45min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

A springboard to waterfalls, coral reefs, shark encounters and beautiful islands. More nature and less chaos than the capital Manila.

Manila, Philippines

  • Flight time: 7hr 55min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

Bustling streets, vibrant markets, and a mix of colonial and modern architecture give Manila its energy, but safety can be a concern in some areas. For most travellers, it’s best used as a gateway to the Philippines’ scenic islands and provinces, with just a short stop to explore historic Intramuros or sample local food.

Singapore

  • Flight time: 7hr 55min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

Easy to navigate and ideal for a short stay. With its futuristic gardens, temples, and mix of cultures, it’s an easy introduction to South-East Asia.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • Flight time: 8hr 10min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

A modern city with a rich cultural mix, Kuala Lumpur offers plenty to see between its towering Petronas Towers, colourful Batu Caves, bustling street food markets, and vibrant neighbourhoods. It’s an easy base for exploring nearby nature spots and day-trip destinations.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

  • Flight time: 8hr 25min
  • Time difference: -3 hours

Vibrant, noisy, full of flavour – HCMC is packed with street food, history, and motorbikes. Use it as a launchpad for the Mekong Delta or further north. We spent a bit more than two weeks in Vietnam from north to south, including the central region with Hue and Hoi An, and loved it.

Bangkok, Thailand

  • Flight time: 8hr 50min
  • Time difference: -3 hours

Temples, tuk-tuks, rooftop bars and floating markets. Bangkok is intense and exciting with a lot to explore nearby – and a gateway to the rest of Thailand.

North Asia

It’s a bit further from Brisbane, so I haven’t made it to any of these countries just yet – but they’re very high on my wishlist. I’m especially keen to experience the cultural contrasts, unique food scenes, and the impressive mix of modern cities and ancient traditions. Hopefully not too long before I can write about them from personal experience!

Taipei, Taiwan

  • Flight time: 8hr 40min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

A bit quirky, super friendly, and seriously tasty. Night markets, temples and hot springs await in this underrated Asian gem.

Hong Kong

  • Flight time: 8hr 50min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

Skyscrapers meet street food and scenic hikes. Whether you’re eating dumplings in Mong Kok or taking a tram to The Peak, Hong Kong is high-energy with great views.

Osaka, Japan

  • Flight time: 9hr
  • Time difference: +1 hour

Bright lights, bustling streets, and some of the best food in Japan make Osaka a must for lovers of urban energy. Between exploring Osaka Castle, wandering neon-lit Dotonbori, and tasting takoyaki and okonomiyaki, it’s a city that’s just as fun at night as it is by day, with easy day trips to Kyoto or Nara.

Tokyo, Japan

  • Flight time: 9hr
  • Time difference: +1 hour

Sushi, neon lights, shrines, and sumo – Tokyo is a city of endless contrasts. From peaceful gardens to buzzing shopping districts, every corner holds a surprise, and it all runs with effortless precision.

Guangzhou, China

  • Flight time: 9hr 05min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

A major southern Chinese city with a rich trading history and a booming food scene. Guangzhou is less touristy than Beijing or Shanghai, but a great place to explore authentic Cantonese culture.

Seoul, South Korea

  • Flight time: 10hr 25min
  • Time difference: +1 hour

From K-pop to palaces, Seoul blends old and new in a way few cities do. The café culture is strong, and the skincare game even stronger.

Shanghai, China

  • Flight time: 10hr 30min
  • Time difference: -2 hours

A global city known for its iconic skyline, stylish boutiques, and historic French Concession. Walk the Bund, explore museums, or ride the world’s fastest train.

Middle East

So far, I only know the airports in this region as it’s where I usually transit on the way to Europe. To be honest, I’ve never really felt drawn to visit. I’m not a fan of the lifestyle or destinations that put too much emphasis on luxury and showing off wealth, and I’m also concerned about the environmental impact of building cities in the desert. That said, I know there’s more to explore beyond the shiny skyscrapers.

Dubai, UAE

  • Flight time: 14hr 35min
  • Time difference: -6 hours

High-rises in the desert. Go from air-conditioned malls to camel rides in the dunes, then back for a rooftop drink overlooking the Burj Khalifa.

Doha, Qatar

  • Flight time: 14hr 50min
  • Time difference: -7 hours

Less flashy but just as impressive, Doha mixes Arabian tradition with slick architecture. Wander the souqs, visit world-class museums, or enjoy the Gulf views.

North America

I can’t believe I’m yet to visit these cities! It’s actually quite far from Brisbane, so when I finally make it there, I’d want to have plenty of time to explore properly. There’s so much variety in landscapes, cultures, and experiences in both the US and Canada, and I know it’ll be worth the wait.

San Francisco, USA

  • Flight time: 13hr 10min
  • Time difference: -17 hours

I’ve dreamed of seeing the Golden Gate Bridge since I was a teenager, so I hope to make it to San Francisco one day. It’s also a great base for exploring Northern California.

Los Angeles, USA

  • Flight time: 13hr 20min
  • Time difference: -17 hours

LA is iconic – Hollywood, TV stars, famous beaches… I’ve only transited through the airport so far, but I’d love to find time to explore the city properly one day.

Vancouver, Canada

  • Flight time: 14hr 40min
  • Time difference: -17 hours

Mountains, ocean, forests, and food trucks – Vancouver is a dream for outdoor lovers. The surroundings looked stunning from the plane, but we chose to spend our layover in Montreal instead, so we’ve placed Vancouver high on our list… but only if we can be there around summer!

Dallas, USA

  • Flight time: 14hr 50min
  • Time difference: -15 hours

I learned while writing this article that the Dallas TV show’s theme tune had lyrics only in France! This little fact has shaped how I imagine the city – a blend of cowboy heritage and modern city life.
