If your time in Krabi Province is limited and you have to pick just one destination, the choice between Ao Nang and Koh Lanta can be surprisingly tricky. During our trip to Thailand, we visited both Ao Nang and Koh Lanta, but in very different ways. We only spent a short time in Ao Nang while staying a bit inland, using it mainly as a base to reach other beaches and join island tours. In contrast, we spent a few days soaking up Koh Lanta’s more relaxed atmosphere. Both places are beautiful, but they offer very different experiences.

Here’s our first-hand comparison to help you choose.

Comparing Ao Nang and Koh Lanta

Atmosphere

Ao Nang has a busy, tourist-friendly vibe with restaurants, bars, and shops lining the main streets. It’s lively day and night, with plenty going on and easy access to organised activities.

Koh Lanta, in contrast, feels spread out and relaxed, perfect if you like quiet beaches and a slower pace. It’s not boring – there are still plenty of bars and chilled-out spots, especially along the main beaches – but you won’t be dodging people every time you go for a walk. For us, the extra space and calmer vibe made it feel like a better fit.

Activities and tours from Ao Nang and Koh Lanta

From Ao Nang, you’ll find endless options for organised tours. Longtail boats await to take you to the famous Railay Beach (busy, but stunning), island-hopping adventures (again, stunning landscapes), or even all the way to the Phi Phi Islands. The scenery around the islands close to Ao Nang is spectacular; the limestone cliffs and turquoise water were among the most striking we saw in Thailand.

If you want to be more active, you can go kayaking through mangroves or try rock climbing. There’s also a short trail, the Monkey Trail (watch your belongings!), that leads from Ao Nang to Pai Plong Beach. If you like variety and a packed itinerary, Ao Nang makes it easy.

Koh Lanta’s activities are a little more low-key but no less rewarding. Tours tend to be smaller-scale, with fewer boats and a calmer atmosphere than Ao Nang’s popular spots. This makes it better for snorkelling; Koh Rok and Koh Haa are especially famous. However, Emerald Cave, which was a truly unique experience, felt very busy, and we were glad to return to Koh Lanta’s quieter vibe afterwards. While there are fewer tours and activities on Koh Lanta, and the organisation can feel more laid-back than in Ao Nang, that relaxed pace is part of the island’s charm.

On Koh Lanta itself, we enjoyed the short walks to the lighthouse and in the forest of Mu Ko Lanta National Park, where again we only saw a few people. On the other end of the island, we spent a slow afternoon in the old town for some quiet shopping and lunch with a view.

Accommodation and dining

Ao Nang has something for every budget – from cheap hostels to luxury resorts – and the beachfront promenade is lined with restaurants, shops, bars and a night market.

Be careful not to book at a party place (unless you want to party, obviously). By getting further away from the beach, you’ll find cheaper and more comfortable accommodation. As we visited as a group, we preferred to stay in a villa a bit inland (Moon Pool Villa), which allowed us to have stunning views and our private swimming pool in a quiet area. We had rented a vehicle at Krabi Airport, so we didn’t have to worry about getting from one place to another, and we liked having the flexibility to explore different places in the evening.

Moon Pool Villa

Koh Lanta leans towards boutique stays, eco-resorts, and family-run guesthouses. The size of our group allowed us again to rent a villa (Villa Siam Lanna) with our private swimming pool. We chose the south of the island as it is reputed to be more relaxed, which is what we were looking for.

Villa Siam Lanna

We were very close to the beach (Kantiang Beach) with the Koh Lanta statue from the famous French TV show based on Survivor, and we really liked the atmosphere there with a few choices for restaurants (some right on the beach), a bit of entertainment, but not too many people and a slow pace. All around the island, it was easy to find quiet restaurants with stunning views.

Natural beauty

Ao Nang Beach is undeniably photogenic, with dramatic cliffs framing the beach with golden sand. We’ve heard it can get quite busy during high season, though it was rather quiet in late April when we were there. But it’s not as stunning as the other nearby beaches you can visit with a boat tour. The town itself wasn’t particularly charming, and we actually didn’t even take photos of it.

Ao Nang

Koh Lanta doesn’t have the same dramatic cliff backdrop. Its beauty is in its sense of space, with long, open beaches and jungle-covered hills, with only a few visitors for good opportunities to slow down and enjoy nature in peace.

How to get there

Ao Nang is just a 30-minute drive from Krabi International Airport, so it’s a quick and easy choice if you’re short on time.

Koh Lanta takes a little longer (2-2.5hrs). You’ll need to drive and then catch a ferry (around a 15-minute ride), but the journey is part of the fun, with coastal views and that “we’re going on an adventure” feeling. I read there’s also a passenger boat going there from Krabi town during the peak season.

Who should visit each

  • Ao Nang is perfect for first-time visitors to Thailand, solo travellers, and those who enjoy a lively atmosphere with plenty of activities and nightlife. It’s also a convenient base for exploring the stunning nearby islands with their dramatic limestone cliffs – a must-see when travelling to Thailand.
  • Koh Lanta is ideal for couples, families, and travellers seeking space or a peaceful retreat. If you have a few days to spare and value unspoiled nature and slowing down, and you’ve already seen stunning limestone cliff landscapes, Koh Lanta is a great choice.
