Planning a trip to Koh Lanta, Thailand? Whether you’ve got three, four, or five days, this laid-back island has plenty to offer. Think quiet beaches, island-hopping tours, scuba diving, jungle walks… Here’s a breakdown to help you decide how many days in Koh Lanta is right for you, based on our experience.

3 days in Koh Lanta – a busy but doable stay

Three days in Koh Lanta is just enough for a taste of the island. Even for a short trip, Koh Lanta is worth visiting. If you only have this amount of time, I recommend focusing on the highlights.

  • Day 1 – Arrival day. Tour the island and relax on the beaches.
  • Day 2 – Island hopping tour. We chose a 4 Islands with the famous Emerald Cave, but the Koh Rok and Koh Haa combo is another great option for snorkelling.
  • Day 3 – Explore Mu Ko Lanta National Park in the morning, then wander Koh Lanta Old Town in the afternoon for its wooden stilt houses and relaxed cafes. If you don’t have your own transport, you can book a guided tour.
Koh Lanta fire entertainment

For evenings, you could join a Thai cooking class or simply enjoy Koh Lanta’s relaxed nightlife. We watched a fire show on the beach near our accommodation – a fun way to end the day after watching the sunset. There’s also a walking street in Saladan (north of the island) with a lively night market.

With three days, you’ll be moving quite quickly, but you’ll still see Koh Lanta’s main attractions – if you’re not unlucky with the weather.

Trying to choose between Ao Nang and Koh Lanta? They offer very different experiences, and it’s not always possible to do both. Here’s my take on Ao Nang vs Koh Lanta to help you plan.

4 days in Koh Lanta – what I did

An extra day gave us time to explore without rushing and to enjoy the island’s slow rhythm. We originally thought of using the fourth day for scuba diving or snorkelling, but most of our group were feeling a bit under the weather, so we took it easy.

  • Day 1 – Relaxed on the beaches near our villa, including Kantiang Bay with the Koh Lanta statue.
  • Day 2 – Island-hopping (4 Islands with the famous Emerald Cave).
  • Day 3 – Explored the national park and southern beaches, stopping at viewpoints (restaurants) along the way.
  • Day 4 – Wandered through Old Town and explored the north of the island.

5 days in Koh Lanta – slow down and see more

If you have five days, you can cover the main highlights (beaches, national park, Old Town, and at least one island-hopping tour) without rushing – and still have time to add extra activities.

Ideas for your extra time:

Five days lets you really lean into Koh Lanta’s slow pace while fitting in the island’s best adventures.

Where to stay in Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta villa

Koh Lanta has something for every budget, from backpacker hostels to boutique resorts.

If you want to be close to the action, the stretch between Saladan and Khlong Dao Beach is the most convenient, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and accommodation for every budget. Long Beach is a bit more spread out, so you’ll likely need a scooter or tuk-tuk to get to Saladan.

Further south, Klong Nin is a good all-rounder. Everything you need is within walking distance, and it’s often recommended for families.

We stayed at Kantiang Bay in the south, which was quieter and exactly what we were after – though a little pricier. Our group rented a villa (Villa Siam Lanna) with a private pool. The south of the island is known for being more relaxed, which suited us perfectly. We were close to Kantiang Beach with the Koh Lanta statue from the French TV show based on Survivor. The area had just enough restaurants and entertainment without being too busy, and we loved the slow pace.

Go even further and you’ll reach almost deserted beaches with just a couple of resorts like Anda Lanta and LaLaanta Hideaway. Perfect for seclusion, but you’ll definitely need transport.

So, how many days on Koh Lanta?

I wish I could have stayed for a week, or more! But you rarely have this amount of time when travelling, so if you are limited by time, you’ll need at least:

  • 3 days – enough for the highlights if you’re short on time.
  • 4 days – a great balance of activity and relaxation (this is what we did).
  • 5 days – best if you want to enjoy most activities and also the island’s slow pace.

Koh Lanta isn’t about ticking off endless attractions. It’s about enjoying the beaches, exploring at your own rhythm, and soaking up the atmosphere. I loved my four days there, but if you’ve got the time, five days would make it even better – especially if you’re a scuba diver.

How to get to Koh Lanta

We flew into Krabi International Airport and rented a car. Before heading to Koh Lanta, we spent a couple of days exploring the area near Krabi Town. The drive to Koh Lanta took around 2.5 hours, including a short 15-minute car ferry. Read more about why we chose Krabi and our experience.

It’s also easy to get a minibus transfer or hop on a passenger boat (during peak season only) from Krabi town.
