I know, this title sounds dramatic. But if you’re researching a cruise in northern Vietnam and trying to choose between Bai Tu Long Bay vs Halong Bay, hear me out. Like many travellers, I was initially drawn to the iconic Halong Bay – the one you see in every Vietnam brochure. But I’m so glad we didn’t make the travel mistake of going there.

Here’s why we chose Bai Tu Long Bay instead, and why it might be the right choice for you too.

A quick geography lesson: Bai Tu Long Bay vs Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay

What many travellers don’t realise is that there are actually three bays in this iconic region, all part of the same stunning limestone karst landscape:

  • Halong Bay – the most famous, and the only one officially recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Lan Ha Bay – located south of Halong, near Cat Ba Island
  • Bai Tu Long Bay – to the northeast, quieter and less developed

Altogether, the area features around 2,000 limestone karsts and islets rising from emerald waters. The key difference is the level of tourism. Halong Bay is the name everyone knows, so that’s where everyone goes.

Bai Tu Long Bay

Why we skipped Halong Bay

Before our trip, we read negative reviews about over-tourism in Halong Bay and boats queuing for kayaking spots, dozens of vessels packed into the same area overnight, overcrowded caves, and water pollution… Not exactly the peaceful nature escape we were after.

Our Vietnamese travel agent recommended Bai Tu Long Bay instead, and it ended up being one of the best decisions of our 2-week trip around Vietnam.

In my opinion, Bai Tu Long Bay vs Halong Bay isn’t just about popularity and visiting one of the world’s most famous site – it’s about the experience. If you’re after a peaceful cruise with fewer boats and a connection with nature, skip the touristy Halong Bay and head to Bai Tu Long Bay instead. It’s still the same magical scenery – just with fewer crowds and more serenity.

Why we enjoyed Bai Tu Long Bay

  • Far fewer boats: Our guide told us that Bai Tu Long Bay sees around 40 times fewer boats than Halong Bay. Only a handful of companies are licensed to operate in this area.
  • Less crowded, more relaxing: At the end of each day, we could only see a few boats around us – and they were far enough away that we didn’t even hear them. It made the whole experience feel remote and peaceful. It also meant that our photos looked even more beautiful, with no crowds in the background.
  • Authentic activities: When we went kayaking and swimming at the beach, it was just the 30 people from our boat. Another boat only arrived when it was time for us to leave.
  • Cave visit without the chaos: We had to queue briefly to enter the cave (it’s one-way), but once inside, the groups were spaced out enough to enjoy it quietly.

A few things to keep in mind

  • It’s further away: Bai Tu Long Bay is a bit further than Halong Bay, which means it’s not really suitable for a day trip. But for a cruise, it just means more time enjoying the scenery as you sail.
  • Cruises are pricier: We paid more than we would have for a typical Halong Bay cruise, but it was 100% worth it for a less touristy and more peaceful experience.
  • Still popular – just less so: Don’t expect complete solitude, but do expect a much calmer atmosphere.

Is Bai Tu Long Bay a must-see?

It was one of our highlights in Vietnam. However, some travellers on our cruise actually preferred their time in Ninh Binh, which has similar scenery without the need for a boat and a lot more flexibility. Quick tips for visiting Bai Tu Long Bay

  • What to expect: Stunning limestone karsts and emerald waters, similar to Halong Bay but with far fewer boats and a more peaceful atmosphere.
  • How long to stay: A 2-day, 1-night cruise will allow you to enjoy the scenery, activities, and sunsets without feeling rushed. Longer cruises offer more remote spots.
  • How to get there: Around 3.5–4 hours from Hanoi to the port in Hon Gai. Transfers are usually included in cruise packages.
  • Where we stayed: We joined Swan Cruise Halong for an overnight Bai Tu Long Bay cruise – comfortable cabins with sea views, kayaking, a cave and a beach visit included.
  • Top highlights: Kayaking around the limestone peaks, enjoying the views from the sun deck.
  • What to pack: It’s recommended to leave your suitcase in your hotel in Hanoi and only pack a small bag. Bring light clothing for warm days, a jacket for cool mornings and evenings on deck, swimwear, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Best time to visit: October to April for cooler, drier weather and clear views. May to September is warmer but can bring more rain and the risk of storms.

Where is Bai Tu Long Bay?

Bai Tu Long Bay is located in the northeast of Vietnam, just to the northeast of the more famous Halong Bay. It covers a large area of limestone karsts, small fishing villages, and untouched beaches.
