Keperra Bushland Reserve is a handy spot for a quick bush walk close to Brisbane. It’s only about 30 minutes from the CBD, which makes it an easy escape if you don’t have much time but still want to get outdoors. Not everyone will find the walk worth it for the views alone, but if you’re after a short workout in nature, the loop track to the lookout can be a good option.

Summary
Distance: 3.3 km
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: moderate/hard

Disclaimer: The hiking time and difficulty are based on our experience. We are experienced hikers with a good level of fitness, used to hiking long distances and scrambling. But we also enjoy pausing to admire the views, check for wildlife and take photos. We possess good navigation skills and use a Garmin watch with a GPS navigation map. Always check the park alerts and notes, as trail conditions change over time, which may affect the hike’s level of difficulty.

Our route

We parked at the end of Cobalt Street, one of the many entrances to the reserve (marked as #1 at the top of the map). Our goal was to reach the lookout (bottom right of the map) and do a loop.

From the start, we took the bitumen path (straight at intersection 2) and then stay right at intersection 5 to head to the lookout. It took us about 30 minutes to get there (1.7 km).

Tip: don’t keep walking past the lookout; it’s a cul-de-sac with nothing more to see.

To complete the loop, we returned via the gravel road – turning right at intersection 5 to go down and then left at intersection 6. That part took us 35 minutes (1.6 km).

Why do this walk

This isn’t a hike for big views – it’s a short but solid workout in nature. I liked how it pushed my legs and heart rate without taking up the whole day. It’s a great option if you:

  • want a short bush walk close to Brisbane
  • are looking to build fitness
  • only have a couple of hours or so but want to disconnect from the city

If you’re expecting sweeping, open views, this one isn’t it. You can spot some peaks (like Flinders Peak) in the distance, but they’re framed by trees and quite far away.

Track conditions and difficulty

  • Bitumen road: In excellent condition, but very steep right from the start. My Garmin watch had me in the red zone within minutes. Elevation gain was about 189 metres. Great for building muscular endurance and really working the calves.
  • Gravel road: A big contrast to the bitumen. It’s steep in places, slippery, and has large humps (likely to manage erosion). I found it more challenging on the way down, especially as I’m still recovering from ACL surgery. Good hiking shoes are a must, and poles would have helped.

If you want to avoid the tricky downhill, it might be worth trying the loop clockwise: go up via the gravel road and come down the bitumen (I’m not sure!).
