Trying to choose between Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé? If you’re planning a trip along the Alsace Wine Route and don’t have time to see every village in Alsace, this is one of the most common dilemmas. They’re only a few minutes apart, both surrounded by vineyards, and both filled with colourful half-timbered houses. But the experience on the ground was quite different when we visited both on my Alsace itinerary, so I share how we felt to try to help you decide.

Quick comparison: Riquewihr vs Ribeauvillé

If your time is tight, Riquewihr delivers the “wow” factor faster. If you enjoy exploring beyond one main tourist street, Ribeauvillé gives you more options.

Christmas marketThe most popular Christmas village in Alsace, with a very fairytale feel.A real medieval experience with sellers in medieval costumes, musicians and dancers and even medieval food on offer.

Our experience in Riquewihr: the classic Alsace village

If you’ve seen photos of Alsace online, chances are you’ve already seen Riquewihr. The village is compact, beautifully preserved and incredibly photogenic. The main street is lined with pastel half-timbered houses, small wine shops and traditional winstubs. At one end stands the Dolder Tower, adding to the medieval feel.

What I like about Riquewihr is how efficient it is. You can wander the entire historic centre by following the tourist circuit, discover local specialties in small shops and even sit down for lunch and taste local wines in only a few hours.

It does get busy, especially in summer and during Christmas markets. But if you visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon, it feels much more enjoyable.

Best for: a quick visit, first-time visitors to Alsace, photographers.

Our experience in Ribeauvillé: so much more to explore than the town centre

Ribeauvillé is slightly larger and feels a lot less like an open-air museum. The centre has its charms, with historic buildings and wine cellars, but it stretches out more than Riquewihr. What really sets it apart are the castle ruins above the village. If you enjoy walking, you can hike up for panoramic views over the vineyards and plains.

This is where I underestimated my timing. Ribeauvillé isn’t just a “quick wander” stop if you want to explore properly. Between the streets, shopping and a castle walk, you can easily spend half to a full day here.

It definitely felt more lived-in and less concentrated with tourist shops. For some travellers, that’s a plus.

Best for: travellers with more time, walkers.

Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé if you only have one afternoon?

If I had to choose just one with limited time, I’d pick Riquewihr without hesitation. It gives you that immediate Alsace atmosphere in a compact area. You don’t need to plan much, and you’ll leave with beautiful photos and a strong impression of the region.

But if you prefer fewer tourists and more locals, are keen to walk to a viewpoint, and most of all enjoy villages that feel less “perfect” but where people actually live, then Ribeauvillé might suit you better. However, make sure you plan your timing carefully and don’t make the same mistake as us by underestimating how long you’ll need.

Can you visit both Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr?

Yes, and honestly, that’s what I recommend if you have time. They’re only about 10 minutes apart by car (or there’s a bus from Colmar), both along the Alsace Wine Route. You could:

  • spend the morning in Riquewihr
  • have lunch
  • move on to Ribeauvillé for the afternoon
  • hike up to the castles at the end of the day

If you’re following a 5-day Alsace itinerary, pairing the two works very well in one day.

Where are Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé?

Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are located in north-eastern France, in the Alsace region, along the famous Alsace Wine Route. They sit just a few kilometres apart, between vineyards and the foothills of the Vosges mountains. By car:

  • Riquewihr is about 15 minutes from Colmar
  • Ribeauvillé is about 20 minutes from Colmar
  • Both are around 50–60 minutes from Strasbourg

If you’re driving the Alsace Wine Route, they’re very easy to combine in the same day.

If you’re planning an overnight stay, you might want to consider the nearby bigger town Colmar. It has more accommodation options and more restaurants open in the evening. It works really well as a base for exploring nearby villages like Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé on day trips.

That said, staying overnight in one of the villages can be special. Once the day-trippers leave, the streets become much quieter and you can experience the atmosphere in a completely different way.
