If you’re planning a trip to Alsace, you’ll quickly notice that Riquewihr appears on every “most beautiful villages” list. With so many stunning villages in the region, it’s natural to wonder whether Riquewihr is actually worth visiting – especially if you don’t like crowds or are short on time.

Riquewihr was the first village we visited in Alsace. Here’s how I feel about our few hours in Riquewihr.

Is Riquewihr worth visiting?

Yes – Riquewihr is worth visiting, especially if you combine it with other nearby villages or pair it with a vineyard tour. It’s one of the most beautiful villages in Alsace, with colourful half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and medieval towers that make it a postcard-perfect stop.

That said, it’s also one of the busiest villages in the region. When we visited, even outside high season, it definitely wasn’t peaceful and felt very touristy. Knowing this in advance helps you appreciate its beauty without expecting an authentic, quiet Alsace village.

What I loved about Riquewihr

The picture-perfect streets

Riquewihr is genuinely stunning. Every corner looks like it belongs in a fairy tale, and I loved wandering the main street lined with colourful medieval houses. You don’t need to plan much before visiting Riquewihr as there’s a tourist circuit around town to see all the points of interest in about 1.5 hours.

Those with mobility issues might be interested in the mini train, but read the reviews first to have the right expectations.

Friendly shops and local specialties

Even though the village is touristy, the shop owners were friendly and happy to answer our questions about local products. A few shops were packed with regional specialties, making it a fantastic way to discover the flavours of Alsace and get a first taste of the region.

One must-try is the Macaron de Riquewihr, a coconut macaroon that shouldn’t be confused with a French meringue macaron. It’s chewy, sweet, and a unique local treat.

A classic stop on the Alsace Wine Route

If you’re exploring vineyards, Riquewihr is an easy and logical stop. We hired an electric car and spent the day hopping between villages and winery viewpoints, and Riquewihr fit in perfectly.

Close to other charming villages

You don’t need to spend long in Riquewihr to enjoy it, which makes it perfect to combine with Ribeauvillé, Kaysersberg, Eguisheim or even smaller stops like Zellenberg or Hunawihr. This is how I think Riquewihr is best experienced – as part of a wider loop.

What to know before you go

It’s very busy

Because it’s so famous, Riquewihr attracts a lot of tour groups. If you want fewer crowds, aim for early morning or late afternoon. Even then, expect some level of busyness.

It doesn’t feel like a quiet, authentic village

If you’re looking for a peaceful Alsace village, this isn’t the one. For something more relaxed, I preferred places like Andlau.

You don’t need long to see it

A couple of hours is enough to wander the streets, grab a bite and take photos. I wouldn’t plan a full day here or stay overnight unless you want to spend time there after the day trippers leave.

How to include Riquewihr in your Alsace itinerary

If you want to make the most of your time, here are two easy ways to add Riquewihr into your trip:

  • Do a village loop – Rent a car or book a tour to explore several villages in one day.
  • Pair it with a vineyard visit – Start your day with a wine tasting nearby, then stroll through Riquewihr afterwards. If you plan to drink, it’s better to join a tour!

Where is Riquewihr?

Riquewihr is located in the Alsace region in north-eastern France, between Colmar and Ribeauvillé. It sits right on the Alsace Wine Route, surrounded by vineyards, which makes it an easy stop when exploring what the region is most famous for.

From Colmar, it’s around a 20-minute drive. Riquewihr can also be reached by public transport from Colmar using the bus line 16 (Colmar – Riquewihr – Ribeauvillé – see more information here), which is ideal in high season to avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot or balancing wine tasting with driving.

From Strasbourg, Riquewihr is around a 50-minute drive, making it possible to visit on a day trip. Public transport options are limited from Strasbourg, so joining a tour or having a car makes it much easier to explore Riquewihr along with nearby villages and wineries in the same day.
