I’ve done the trip from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise by public transport many times, and over time I’ve learnt a few small but useful tricks that make the journey easier. Taking public transport from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise isn’t the fastest option, but it’s budget-friendly, predictable, and easy once you know the small details. With these tips, you’ll know what to expect at each step!

Important to avoid a fine
Before anything else, here’s the one rule you absolutely need to remember: always tap on and tap off.
- Tap on at the station before boarding the train.
- Tap off when you arrive at Helensvale.
- Tap on again when entering the tram station.
- Tap off once you arrive at your final G:link/tram stop.
You can use a Go Card or a bank card/phone/watch, but each traveller needs their own card or device.
Even though the entire trip is currently only 50c, the fine for fare evasion is over $300. And yes – officers check regularly on both the train and the tram and distribute fines. It’s simply not worth the risk.
Why I often choose public transport from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise over driving
Let’s start with why I find taking public transport from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise can be better than driving, even if it’s often longer:
- It’s cheaper: Just 50c at the moment, and you don’t have to pay for parking on the Gold Coast.
- Travel time is more predictable: While the train + tram combination takes more time than driving (+1 hour), that’s only if there is no traffic on the M1. In peak hour or on weekends, traffic can easily double the travel time, and that’s without counting how long it takes to find parking once you arrive.
- I can get things done on the way: I often work on my laptop on the train or tram. It’s comfortable enough to type article ideas, answer emails, or organise photos from previous trips.
Check timings before you go
I always check the Translink website or simply use Google Maps to get up-to-date train and tram times, platform changes, and any delays. It makes the whole trip much easier to plan, especially if you’re trying to avoid peak hours or want to coordinate your arrival with an activity in Surfers Paradise.
Take the train to Helensvale
You’ll first take a Gold Coast line train towards Varsity Lakes and get off at Helensvale after about an hour.
A few tips from experience:
- The aircon can feel cold: It’s great on hot Queensland days, but sometimes it’s a bit too strong. I always bring a jumper so I can stay warm.
- There’s only one toilet on the train: It’s usually in the third or fourth carriage. If you need it and you’re not in the right carriage, you’ll have to walk through the train – another reason I take precautions before starting the full journey.
- No overhead luggage racks: There should be plenty of space for luggage if you travel outside peak hours, but don’t expect racks like in long-distance trains.
- Phone reception drops often (but there’s free wi-fi): The wi-fi is good enough for messaging or basic browsing, but I don’t rely on it for much more.
- It’s not always possible to recharge devices, so I try to start with everything fully charged or carry a power bank.
Switching to the tram at Helensvale
The tram connection (G:link) is easy:
- Go up the stairs, turn left (tap off), and go down another set of stairs to the tram platform (tap on again!).
- If you have luggage, there are lifts.
- A tram is often waiting, but it doesn’t necessarily depart straight away.
- Trams run every 7–15 minutes, so no need to rush.
The tram takes around 50 minutes to reach Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.
If you miss Helensvale:
Helensvale isn’t the last station. If you forget to get off, you can get out at Nerang station and take a bus to Surfers Paradise. The bus can even be slightly faster depending on where you’re going, but I find it harder to follow the journey and generally less comfortable. The tram is simpler and more predictable.
